Toyota Tercel Picture
The Tercel has always been the entry-level Toyota with a very basic, no frill
interior. It attracts car enthusiasts as a simple, reliable and fuel-efficient
small car. Older Tercels came in hatchback and wagon versions but the fifth generation
was only sold in two body styles, a two-door and a four-door sedan.
It was the first front-wheel drive vehicle ever produced by Toyota. Named the
Corolla Tercel, it was intended that the Corolla image - long known for quality
and durability - would bring buyers to this new product. Tercel's front-wheel
drive design ensured that the vehicle delivered maximum interior space in a small
package. The
Toyota Tercel originally sold as either a two-door coupe or three-door hatchback, with each
model powered by a 1.5L single overhead cam four-cylinder engine producing 60-horsepower.
Transmission choices were either a four- or five-speed manual or three-speed automatic.
Despite its ultra durable record some owners experience hard starting problems
in cold weather and poor heater/defogger performance. Automatic transmissions
were subject to warranty-covered modifications in both '95 and '96. Older Tercels
(made back in the eighties) were recalled for rusted-out rear suspension control
arms and check for engine oil leaks at the base of the distributor. Yet the Toyota
Tercel took small car durability to new heights in its twenty-one year history.
A reliable and fuel-efficient transportation, its always in-demand.
